In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Quality education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.” However, the reality in Nigeria paints a different picture. As of 2022, over 20 million children in the country remain out of school, a staggering statistic reported by UNESCO.

Amidst this educational challenge, a remarkable collaboration emerged, shining a beacon of hope and change for the children of Kurba community school in the remote Yamaltu Delba local government area of Gombe state. The catalyst for this change was a visionary partnership between The Illuminator’s Academy and Stanbic IBTC, a collaboration fueled by a shared mission to elevate the quality of education in public schools across Nigeria.

Stanbic IBTC’s commitment to social responsibility materialized through their “Adopt a School Programme,” a venture that breathed new life into Kurba community school. The transformation was tangible – dilapidated classrooms were replaced with new ones, furnished with sets of modern furniture, instantly breathing fresh air into the learning environment.

The journey from conception to fruition was nothing short of remarkable. A team from The Illuminator’s Academy embarked on a journey from Lagos, with a connecting flight from Abuja, to reach the heart of Gombe state. Nestled within the multiethnic tapestry of the state, Gombe is affectionately known as the “jewel of the savanna,” a region home to numerous rural communities, including the spirited Kurba.

The real magic unfolded within the walls of Kurba community school. The language barrier dissolved in the presence of the Academy’s mind-illuminating tools, captivating the attention of both students and educators alike. The atmosphere was electrifying, with engaging sessions that left the children reluctant to see their newfound mentors depart.

The impact rippled far beyond the walls of the classrooms. Every child was gifted with valuable resources, including two transformative books. These pages were not just ink on paper; they held the power to inspire dreams, ignite aspirations, and shift the trajectory of young lives. The joy was palpable, and the excitement resonated in the voices of over 110 children, echoing with the proclamation: “I am a superstar! I can be anything I want to be!”

Among these resources was the groundbreaking GCLMug, a global phenomenon recognized by the United Nations, now available in Hausa language – a testament to its relevance for every Northern child. The GCLMug’s empowering message evoked profound emotions, leaving some children teary-eyed yet inspired, transcending language and cultural boundaries.

The impact reached even those who were not physically present. The event left a lasting imprint on Kurba’s children, sparking a desire to share their stories, experiences, and aspirations. The collaborative effort between The Illuminator’s Academy and Stanbic IBTC became a beacon of hope, illuminating the path towards quality and relevant education for the grassroots and the vulnerable – a remarkable feat in the journey to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal number 4.

As the sun sets over Gombe’s savanna, the impact of this collaboration continues to radiate, serving as a testament to the transformative power of education, resilience, and the unwavering commitment to change lives for the better.
